NETWERC H2O – THE LOCAL RESPONSE TO THE INTERNATIONAL ISSUE OF WATER

WATER AND SMART CITIES – TEAM LEADER: DE MONTFORT UNIVERSITY

Smart cities and sustainable cities and communities are a key research and demonstration area in cities throughout the world. Water will plays a key part in any future city development, but it is often overlooked in the European smart city agenda.

The “water and smart cities” community will be addressing this issue through activities to integrate water related issues into the smart city. To date, projects such as BlueSCites  http://www.bluescities.eu/  and POWER  http://cordis.europa.eu/project/rcn/200022_en.html  are a good starting point. However, more activities needed to include water related issues into future smart cities.

The community will identify potential opportunities for joint projects to address different aspects of water in the smart city. Building on the POWER project is looking at water scarcity, water flooding, water quality and other water environmental issues the community will develop further initiatives for European and other funding.
